Major Richard E. Wood, Jr. served as the Chief of Staff and Chief of Logistics of the US Army Medical Research Unit-Kenya in Nairobi, a special foreign activity with over 600 personnel providing full spectrum support to infectious disease research programs and support to research programs on other tropical disease threats encountered by deployed forces. Additionally, he served as a primary unit staff officer with the US Embassy and fostered collaborative medical efforts with several State Department and Department of Defense agencies, non-governmental organizations, and Kenyan Government Ministries. He was selected for this position in virtue of his exceptional performance while dually serving as Chief of Supply Operations and HHC Commander for the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and for his ability to excel in the most demanding and challenging environments. Major Wood is a recipient of a number of awards for his outstanding achievements, including the General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award (2009), and the George C. Marshall Award (2002).
