Jackson Mounts is a Retired Master Sergeant with the United States Air Force. He has amassed nearly four decades of professional military experience, and he continues to strive for excellence. He spent 23 years with the Air Force, four of which he spent as a recruiting officer. He took off-duty courses to increase his knowledge of his chosen field and taught on-the-job training to many of his contemporaries. He retired from the military in 1974 as a Master Sergeant E-7 and then went to work in civil service as a manager in the Elmendorf Base Commissary. He retired in 1986. Over the years, he has owned five motor homes. He is a model railroader and has a large layout in his home. He increased sales by 60 percent while closing over half of the stations. Having been on two remote tours, he knew what the personnel on the stations needed, so he completely reorganized the stock assortment to satisfy their needs. He also authored an accounting manual to assist the remote stewards with operations and set up quarterly training classes at Elmendorf Air Force Base for additional training. He set up a special order program where the remote personnel could order any item that the Exchange carried or that could be obtained from other sources. This precluded having to stock a large inventory of high-end items at the small exchanges. Over the course of his military career, he was honored with an Outstanding Civilian Award by the Department of the Air Force, and a Meritorious Service Medal for Outstanding Service by the United States Air Force. The highlight of his career was spending four years as a recruiting officer visiting high schools and colleges; talking to the young men and women completely changed his mind about the caliber of the majority of young people.
